Good morning and how are you? I too have really sensitive skin and have been prescribed Aveeno and Oilatum for my bath which does help, having said that it didn't totally alleviate the itching but a couple of years ago I decided to, to the best of my ability, stop eating processed food, and I don't mean our baked beans or tinned tomatoes as they are in a sense, real foods, wholegrain,wholemeal - totally keeping away from white flour etc., eating lots of cooked lentils in the shape of your indian dhal and just really trying to eat real food - I found helped immensely - I believe what we put into our bodies totally has a lot to do with what we give out. Chilli may I say is a no, no for me as I immediately start itching lol - if you have any further questions I would be more than glad to help and perhaps some recipes as I do a lot of cooking too. I have just turned 67 years old so we're about the same age - I sincerely hope this helps but anyway we can chat about it - a problem shared is a problem halved. Kind regards Jane

1. you could be allergic to some medication - prescribed or over-the-counter
2. there may be a vitamin deficiency

Could you have gotten scabies? I know someone that practically had to bathe in calamine lotion to get rid of them. The doctor will need a magnifier to see them but they leave white tracks on the skin and the itching is horrible. Do you know anyone else with the same problem = dry, itchy skin?

judy m I am fairly certain its not exema, psoriasis, scabies, thyroid,diabetes related its just my age drying my skin out.
My doctor checked for above things and Im clear of all. Thankyou for info links. Cheers Fran

I sympathise with you, I am 70 and still suffer from the itching and hot flushes, it is so embarrassing as the hot flushes are just my head and constantly my hair is wet through. I do so hope you find something to help you as I know how it affects your life.

Do you drink enough water? Some medications do tend to pull the water out of your skin.

If you are on medications, you might want to search for side effects. You may not have enough humidity in your house. Those in hot, dry areas do seem to have dehydration problems.

Have you tried keeping a diary? Writing down the time of day you eat, drink, sleep, take medications (name and dosage), weather - hot, warm, cool, cold, temperature inside and outside, where you go and some scale of 1 to 10 of the itching.

It can be internal or external causes. You might want to see a dermatologist after you have several weeks recorded in your diary.

It could also be stress related, not enough sleep, poor quality of sleep, sleep apnea, etc.

Please keep us up to date.

With older woman you should not be continuing with hot flashes / flushes of menopause, nor should you still be taking hormone replacement therapy. Many women are done with menopause in their 50s naturally with no additional hormones.

Yes..... Coconut Oil positively affects the brain and helps to ward off Alzheimers. It is a great food. Cook with it for higher heat cooking and sauteing . Before hydrogenated oils and Crisco (now called trans-fats), bakers used Coconut Oil for baked goods. Shortening was less expensive and they shifted from Coconut Oil, which had to be imported. It is great in baking. Check out They have so much information on Coconut/Coconut Oil and its benefits. Worth the trouble to seek it out.

Jan in Kalamazoo, you are close enough to order some of my husband's Wool Wax Creme. It is lanolin based, very little perfume or allergen content, people with psoriasis and flaky dry skin swear by it. It is made in Montana using lanolin cleaned from British sheep's wool where the sheep are washed daily by rain and have a high lanolin content. We sell it from our home and we go to three shows annually but Columbus OH is the nearest to you.

Also, last summer for some reason I decided I was too fat and I went on nearly a starvation diet. Nothing tasted good. Toast tasted like cardboard. I rapidly lost 40 lbs a year ago starting at about this time until Sept. I was on some strange meds which may have caused it but I'll tell you I would rather be fat and sassy and happy any day of my life than going thru what I did, with even dry mouth and no saliva for a while ending up in ER so scared I was gonna die.

I am 61 and have been menopausal since age 42 (diagnosed by Oprah at the time) which was much earlier than my mother went thru the big M. I see my niece is now P/G/ for first time at age 41; I had 4 kids in rapid succession between 1981 and 1987 and its good we worked fast cuz we had to, hubby was already 45 and I was 29 when we married in 1980.

when I was starving last summer, my hair fell out by brushfuls, my skin was dry (my usual solution to dry skin is lots of ice cream, whole cow's milk and lots of butter), my lips were dry, my feet were dry, my skin was noticeably different and I wanted chapstick all the time which is unusaual in Mich. summer. right nnow my fat happy self is so greasy I sop off the extra oil from my face and neck with wet wipes between showers. New hair has been growing in for many months now.

My daughter's company, Uckele's in Blissfield tested my hair and I was screwed up in every ratio of elements possible, screwed all to bits. I hated drinking cod liver oil upon waking; my mother made me do that when little. Or can use cocout oil which son in law hates but I like. Would rather just eat lots of butter and cookies, though. Even the dogs and cats don't want the new cod liver oil lwith lemon in it.

I also like to eat salmon, can cook in microwave really easily. And tuna in oil. And sausage with oil seeping out, I cook it in microwave. Sausage and potato salad for supper, Ummm. And I love cheese warm at room temp. with oil seeping out of it, like on health nut bread or 7 grain bread. But that plain vanilla ice cream in the bucket cannot be beat for creamy smoothness and lots of the Vitamin D which I was found by MD to be horribly lacking. Give me ice cream therapy anytime instead of shots and tests and needles and more blood draws and all that misery.

Are you drinking enough water? And I mean clean plain water. We have been brainwashed by marketeers to add coffee, tea, chocolate, whiskey, cordials, fruit juices etc. Try 10 days of drinking only water, and plenty of it, and see what happens.

try a shampoo that is sulfate free. sometimes the bottle will say "no sls". stands for sodium lauryl or laureth sulfates. sulfates are detergents that make the foam or bubbles. they can make your scalp dry and itchy. i always check the ingredients on the label.

This is going to sound odd.....but go gluten free. As we age, our bodies tolerate wheat less and less. I am gluten free and it took several months for gluten to clear my system but now no rashes, brain fog, bloating, etc.

This is a VERY useful suggestion. I have begun to feel that I am wheat or gluten intolerant. (Casein in dairy also related in some). I am trying to cut back and do well in-house, but have trouble out. Wheat has been genetically modified 40,000 times to be the wheat we use today. It is in almost everything. Bread is what I miss the most. Sprouted grain bread has less gluten, but often they add more gluten to get the rise needed to make it look and feel and taste like regular bread. Check the labels. Have not found a gluten-free bread substitute that I like that is regularly available. Have been told I have to bake my own. Chia seed gel seems to help in the texture and the rise of gluten-free bread. The one I did find was exorbitantly expensive. Enjoyed it though. There is a VERY HIGH number of people who ARE gluten/wheat intolerant/sensitive that DO NOT KNOW they are, and SUFFER needlessly. It causes multiple disease conditions and discomforts, that are reversible. IT IS worth a check for sure. Bette Hagman has done vast research on this subject, and several books. She is gluten intolerant and has been for years, when there was no information, and so we benefit from her experience. Her very informative book: "The Gluten-Free Gourmet Bakes Bread" has all sorts of things to bake, with all sorts of flour mixes to make great baked products. Lots of info. on gluten free and health. Sorry to say but it sounds like you need to eat loads of fresh fruit and vegetables, salads with a little olive oil/vinegar dressing. Your diet sounds quite out of balance to me. A little grilled fish/chicken. Nice baked potato. That sort of thing. I think that's why you might have skin/scalp problems. Aim for a pure diet and lots of water and you should be fine.

and, your body can only assimilate 4 oz in any 20 minute setting, so downing it all @once wont do you any good ... just sip, sip, sip
