Well, I've cast on and getting started. My question is maybe more curiosity than crucial, but it is about counting garter stitch rows. The pattern says knit 22 rows (11 ridges). That I get, but I'm wondering....I've always considered the right side row to be the row facing me with the tail from the cast on at the right side. Then I would count ridges on that side too, right?
I guess since I just typed this out maybe I've answered my own question, but somehow it just looks different. Maybe it's the size 13 needle and 2 strands of yarn. Its been a long time since I used a 13......like 48 years! And I was much younger then.....

If it's this pattern: http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/gradient-garter-baby-blanket
then there is no right side/wrong side per se.... it's all garter stitch. You would have 11 ridges on both sides.

I use the long tail cast on most times. I always count that as row1 and the right side. So the next row is to 2 and the wrong side. You'll see the difference in the finish on the bottom. To me it looks nicer. Not sure if I explained this right but......

MaryA, which cast on did you use?

Whether the tail is the beginning or end of the row depends on the caston you did.
You will get 11 ridges which ever side you count on. Th eonly difference is whether you finish with a bump or smooth. But it doesn't matter really if you are out by a row- once you have made you first colour change you may want to always change on the same side for consistency in looks.
It's a lovely looking pattern- and very simple. I'm tempted by it- not that I need baby blankets right now.
