I received an old sewing box with lots of old items and this item was in it. Does anyone know what it is and what it is used for. It is small approx. 2" long with a point needle no eye. I have hunted on line and on Ebay with no luck
pokey tool. Lots of uses. In card making for poking little bits of paper out of a die cut, or for pricking a row of holes for decoration.
In fabric craft to make a hole for a fastener, or a hole in leather.
I think it is a tool to mark the point end of a dart to shape the bust area of a blouse or dress. If those opaque things are chalk, it is even more likely.
I don't remember how to do it, but there is a google image search that you can do.
It is a fabric marking set. You put chaulk on the point, push it through to the other handle with chaulk on it and do a little twist. Both sides marked the same. If a paper pattern needs a hole for the chaulk to go through, that is done with the little metah hole punch and the handle end of the other piece.
It's a "chalk tailor tacker" - used for transferring markings from paper sewing patterns onto the fabric. I still use one occassionaly. The metal end is used to cut a hole in the pattern where the marking is, the 'pin' with chalk around it is inserted thru both the hole and the fabric, aligned with the other chalk holder & the two are 'wiggled' a bit and you have a chalk mark on both sides of the fabric. Search results for 'chalk tailor tacker' may explain it better...

It's called a sewing awl.... the points were to take the thread thru canvas or leather...the normal needle thru regular fabrics...this one is a bit fancy, they were usually larger and tougher and sailors always had them on board for sale repair.
That is exactly what it is. Have had one for years and used it when I was sewing for my daughter Can be used for other markings on fabric, also, not just darts. Stick it through the 2 layers of fabric and stick on the other piece and it marks both at once. Very handy little item.

It has nothing to do with "yarns" project, but as has already been said, it is for marking for sewing. No thread goes into it at all. I have one in my sewing stuff.
