    stretchy cast on

    STRETCHY CAST ON

For a 2 x 2 rib cast on in multiples of 5 instead of 4. I used a regular longtail cast on. 1st row is K1, K2 tog, P2. That reduces each group of 5 stitches to 4 .2nd row and beyond K2, P2 rib. Nifty little technique.

Here's the tip I use for cast n Ribbing.

No matter what your cast on number of stitches add an extra stitch for EACH knit stitch only. IE: If asked to cast on 43 st in all c/o 65 one extra for each knit st On the first row ONLY knit two together purl 1 that of course would be for k1 p1 rib. It puts extra yarn into the cast on and keeps it stretchy. It works I use it all the time, I was tired of not having enough stretch to my hats, I found this tip and love it.
It's easier to count a few extra stitches then to try and remember a different cast on method.
    Good Luck

    waterfall scarf pattern

Start with 19 stitches MUST use loop/E rap cast on - needle size 10
depending on length 3-6 oz ww yarn
Garter Stitch (knit every row) until you have your desired length
cut yarn leaving a 30 inch tail
    start your bind off

    Waterfall Scarf Bind off

You bind off 2 sts then you put the yarn tail over the right needle and pull it all the way through the st. That yo actually is locking the st. now drop that stitch off the needle, then k1 st and leave it on the right needle and continue to repeat the same thing again I know it seems silly but when you finish with the row you have these 4 or 5 sts on the right needle and those are the sts that you drop and pull out later making the waterfall.

    *** To increase width = add 4 stitches ***

how many stitch will a circ hold

CIRCULAR NEEDLES HOLD HOW MANY STITCHES

This table lists the minimum (min) and maximum (max) number of sts that will fit different circular needles The minimums are the least you should consider for each needle; to avoid stretching the work unnecessarily, it is recommended that more than the absolute minimum number of stitches be worked on any given size needle.

    NEEDLE CABLE LENGTH
    SIZE 16 24 29 36 60
    5 80 / 160 120 / 240 145 / 290 180 / 360 300 / 600

    6 100 / 200 140 / 280 175 / 350 215 / 430 360 / 720

    7 110 / 220 170 / 340 205 / 410 250 / 500 420 / 840

    8 130 / 260 190 / 380 230 / 460 290 / 580 480 / 960

how to change your PDF file to show the first page of the pattern so you don't have to open all the patterns to see picture of what they are.
Well....I just discovered how to do it and thought I would share my discovery!
Open a PDF file, click on "edit", then go to "preferences"
Then click on the box that says "enable PDF thumbnail previews in Windows Explorer" and then click "okay". Voila..it works!

chg flat to knit in round formula

Stockinette stitch flat--a two row process, knit 1 row, purl 1 row
Stockinette stitch round--a one row process, knit every row

Garter stitch flat--a one row process, knit every row
Garter stitch round--a two row process, knit 1row, purl 1 row

If you learn this concept you will understand your knitting and can easily change from flat to round and visa versa.

    ssk how to

HOW TO DO THE SSK STITCH SEE NEW WAY INSTR BELOW

SSK correctly done is slip knitwise one stitch off the left needle to the right needle, slip knitwise the second stitch off the left needle to the right needle. Insert your left needle tip through these two stitches on their front legs, and then using the right needle tip you will knit these two stitches together through the back loops (legs). This will make a left slanting decrease.

This is the original instructions on the SSK technique. However, there are "modern" knitters who do not follow the old ways of knitting and have decided that they will slip the second stitch purlwise. This is not the original way to perform this SSK.

    Here is the improved ssk.

    http://www.knittinghelp.com/video/play/ssk-improved-english

Slip as if to knit, slip as if to purl, stick LN into from of 2 slipped stitches and knit together. It lays a bit more flat.

    1a free magazine patterns

    knit and crochet patterns free

    https://archive.org/details/knittingmagazines?sort=titleSorter

Maybe you can start here...I spend a little time each day cruising through the old magazines here. You can download the PDF and print any of the pages. At the top click on any of the heavy print letters of the alphabet and it takes you to magazines starting with that letter. You can then click on a magazine...it will show in a black box. Over on the right side, click on the magnifying glass symbol...now you can flip through the pages. Below the magazine you are viewing, you can download the magazine (for free...). I use the pdf...then I print the pages I want and I don't save the magazine to my hard-drive...

    end of row
Repeat the pattern row until scarf is at desired length
    Knit 1 row

    salvage edges how to

    FROM VOGUE TUTORIAL

    one-stitch selvages

    garter st selvage

Garter stitch selvage (left side) This selvage is best worked on stockinette stitch fabrics and is the easiest selvage for beginners. Garter stitch selvage (right side) The selvage looks slightly different on the right edge, as shown here. Work left and right edges as follows: Row 1 Knit one, work to the last stitch, knit one. Repeat this row.
    slip-stitch selvages

This method has three variations. All of them make a chain stitch edge, with each chain loop representing two rows. It is perfect to use when you must later pick up stitches.

English method Row 1 (RS) Slip the first stitch knitwise, work to the last stitch, slip the last stitch knitwise. Row 2 Purl one, work to the last stitch, purl one. Repeat these two rows.

French method Row 1 (RS) Slip the first stitch knitwise, work to the last stitch, knit one. Row 2 Slip the first stitch purlwise, work to the last stitch, purl one. Repeat these two rows.

German method Row 1 (RS) Knit the first stitch, work to the last stitch. With the yarn in back, slip the last stitch purlwise. Row 2 Purl the first stitch, work to the last stitch. With the yarn in front, slip the last stitch purlwise. Repeat those 2 rows

knit in rd avoid purl bumps showing

When you go from knit to purl in the round you get the purl bumps showing a bit different do this instead

Had the same problem on a pattern I was knitting recently & read a tip here on KP to eliminate that jog in the purl bump. Can't recall who posted the tip or link. Anyway, if the first round is knit & the 2nd round is purl, just start the purl round as usual; but when you get to the last stitch in the round, you slip it purlwise. Then if the 3rd round is knit, just continue knitting all the stitches around...even the slipped stitch. I tried this tip & it works. You repeat this procedure whenever you start a purl row after a knit row

    weave in new color video

Here is a link that might be helpful
I suggest you watch other videos too and try the different techniques. I have been using this technique for as long as I can remember and I don't have a problem. But it does sometimes makes a difference with the type of fiber you use. Wool or wool blends
