Hey Tania, I got my youngest grands head measurements and I am going to try and make that cute button hat for her for Christmas. How are your socks coming or did you finish them?

i'm making a cowl. I started it sunday night and haven't gotten to it again.

I tried to yesterday during lunch, but everyone was asking me so many questions. What are you doing? OMG are you selling that? WHo is it for? What is it called? You won't believe the amount of questions.... I put it away.

Someone does want to buy the cowl I was making.... I could sell it to them, but I have NO idea how to price it. I know that question is so touchy...... grrrr. So it all kinda put me in a funk.

Try to figure out what you would pay for it in the store. But you have to include the cost of your materials too. What does something like that cost in a "nice" store or boutique? $40 or $50? And is that something you can make quickly, also ask yourself if you would make another one. Someone might see the first one and want one too. Go looking in some nice shoppes.

Do not price it too cheaply. Start off high it is easier to go down in price. Also check with Bonnie about pricing.

This is the link to the yarn I bought, where i bought it:
130 yards per skein. I need 200 the patterns says. I'm just about done with the first skein.

This is the pattern.......

I'm half way done in about 4hrs straight work. (Mia was sleeping LOL) NOt too bad....

So your initial cost for the item is arou8nd 18.00 to 20.00to include taxes. How long do you think to make it? Two more days? If you wanted to sell it...I am quessing say $50.00 at least. Like I said check out the shoppes.

Barb, what do you think? I have looked on etsy and "buy cheap" I am thinking around $65 to $75

Ok. Thanks Bitsey! :) 18 is about right. If Mia goes to bed early tonight I could finish it... The pattern calls for blocking. BUt this yarn is a blend... 40% wool. It'll probably block at little. I'll do it for the beauty of it. :)

One of the green owl headbands I made with the same yarn just DK weight kind of felted a little bit when Chris accidentally washed and dried it.

I seriously do not know how to price handmade things. I will only make them for people who I think will appreciate them, understand the time and effort it takes to make something by hand, and the cost of good yarn. Yes, I've miss judged some and will not give to those any handmade items again, but live and learn. As for price, I'm clueless.

So I've been going through patterns and picking some to take to Rhinebeck with me in case I see yarn I just gotta have!

I'm a little disappointed as I heard Signature Needles are not going to be there this year. I really need more needles of any kind!

Hi Everyone... Very pretty cowl, Tania. Unfortunately, not many people are willing to pay what a hand knitted item is worth. $18 in yarn, plus 8 hours of knitting. If you based it on $5 and hour (less than minimum wage!) then you'd be at $40, plus the $18 for yarn... $58- $60? Be prepared for her to freak out when you tell her that. She's probably thinking you can do it for $20, LOL... Don't be afraid to say it's $20 in materials and 8 hours labor, and let her do the math.
