I think I want to take the ultimate "leap of faith" and try dpn's. I know I want wood but which brands do you like? 5" or 6"? I have looked at Knit Picks and Knitter's Pride Dreamz. Kind of leaning to the Dreamz. It is difficult to transition from Magic Loop to DPN's?

I prefer metal, but also have the Knit Picks 6" sock set, which are very stable because they're made like plywood and come in sets of 6, in case of loss or breakage.

I don't knit socks with magic loop, but I do use the technique when starting a project from the center out.

I don't use,Magic Loop either. I prefer longer DPN's to not worry about stitches slipping off the back. I don't like bamboo, though many do.... Recently, I have purchased some square metal ones and they are quite nice. I have so many old ones though and prefer metal or really smooth wood like those you mentioned over plastic or bamboo.

All my dpns are metal; they were given to me for the most part. I don't have problems with the stitches sliding off the back end because I keep the first and last several stitches on each needle quite tight so that ''laddering'' is not a problem for me.

Thank you for your responses. I plan to continue to use Magic Loop for the toes and heels but would like to use DPN's for the foot and leg of the sock as many say it is faster and not as fiddley. (is that a word).

I too have been looking at dpns. I want to make hats, but not sure what to get, 5,6 or 7 inch. I have seen some on Amazon that come with 11 sizes with 5 needles per size. They are wood. Would I be better off buying a better known brand even though it will cost more?

I just finished my first pair and on the second sock I used 4" DPN's. I found the 4" so much easier to knit the sock with and got done faster. Doesn't seem like it would work but I took the word of a trusted long time knitter and got the shorter sticks and really liked it.

I found that the 6" needles are the easiest for my hands. I've knit many, many pairs of socks over the years with all different materials for needles. I love the Knitter's Pride needles, but they are black except for the tips. It makes it difficult to see the stitches in dark yarn at night. I like the different materials for different yarns. Some are happy enough on Chia Goo or Hiya Hiya metals, while other ones love bamboo. I've had to replace a couple of sets of bamboo over the years because they got so bent from the warmth of my hands, but I would never give up my bamboo needles for socks. The only material I will not use are the old aluminum ones. Those really shoot out of the work!

I prefer KnitPro Harmonies in 15cm. (Is that 7 inch) or my newest needles are Karbonz. The Harmonies are very nice to use, light and firm in your hands, I find that bamboo is nice to knit with but don't last, they eventually get a bend, and then I throw them out. .the Karbonz are excellent nice metal tips, but they are black so not suitable for dark colours. Both Harmony and Karbonz come in sets of all sizes for socks. I don't like metal needles, my hands get tired when I use them, they are heavier and the stitches slide off the needles. This is just what I prefer, everyone has their own favourite, but the class I teach generally like the Harmonies.

I learned to knit socks on double points, I have both metal (Chiaogoo) for sizes 1 thru 3 and Dreamz in larger sizes. I recently decided to try a test and I did a time study on knitting socks, I timed magic loop (with 40" circular), double points and short circular (12inch). And the winner was magic loop. It may seem like it is slower, but that is only because I do two socks at once, in the end it was the fastest. When I first did magic loop I was using a 47" needles, but have now changed to a 40", which is faster, less cord to pull/push around. It is good to learn to use double points, but for me the second sock is a killer, I really like having both finished at the same time.

I have eknittingneedles bamboo fixed circulars.. I love the needles so much that I will get their DPN's also... the price is right and if I want a set of 6 inch and 8 inch I can afford to have both! I personally don't know why I would want 8 inch it is just a suggestion for your set of needles.. I will also want the 5 needle set over the 4 needle set... you can always knit with just 4 and have a spare if you want!
