Hi dear KPers,

I'm hoping you can direct me to a pattern...I have been searching for hours.

I was in line at a wake yesterday. The woman in front of me was wearing the most interesting artsy cardigan vest. I complimented her on it and she said her mother knitted it for her.

I don't know how to describe it--I'm hoping you can picture this...It looked like a colorblock vest knitted with a combination of all those boutiquey-like yarns we all knitted scarves from...maybe like all the Prism yarns. Almost like a stash, boutiquey-yarn scarf ...but not in rows, in various blocks. And the colors were all very complimentary.

And I think from my quick glance, the stitches changed in the color blocks too.

Has anyone ever seen anything like what I am trying to describe? If so, can you please direct me to a link for the pattern?

Thank you in advance for your help.

Dianne

Yes, I can picture it, but I have not seen a pattern like. Yet! The mitered square would come the closest but it is not different stitches in each block.

Was it sewn together or were the block built on the previous blocks?

it could very well be just what you said...............the maker used up her scraps.

Go to ravelry.com and search for mitered square. Ravelry is free to join and has many patterns.
Thank you. I'll take a look.

As I remember, the 'blocks' were not all square though. If I remember correctly kind of free-form-ish...

There is an Ann Norling vest I found today in my search. If you find it and can picture the different sized color blocks in the vest, knitted in various stitches with various types of color complimentary yarn...

For the one I admired, I think the yarn used must have been similar to Wild Stuff Prism yarn. The colors/types of yarn were so perfect together.

I'm hoping someone will have seen this work of art somewhere...

Thanks everyone for your input. Dianne

It didn't look like it was sewn together.

this reminds me of when I worked in a small clothing boutique.
One day a woman came in and asked about an out fit she had seen, and really wanted one the same.

My boss said to her."why did you not ask the wearer where she bought it?"

her reply "I did, and she said she had made it from fabric she bought in Europe".

why she thought she would be able to get one "off the rack" still is a mystery.

Sounds neat ! Hope you can find a pattern close to it . I wonder if you could find something in a color block design book . Good Luck !
Just found one book called Knit in New Directions BY Myra Wood . Can google it, sorry I don't know how to add a link.

.....and forever will remain a mystery. I have run into people like this, too. It's truly mind boggling, isn't it?

I have some suggestions, hope they help:
In Google type: Laura Bryant of Prism Arts vests images
see if anything is similar.
or
From left column on Ravelry try:
Photo
Knitting
Attributes
Choose each attribute until perhaps you see something that approximates what you saw.
For example there is a page of projects: http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/gaia-7/people

Also look at this one in case,
http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/search#photo=yes&craft=knitting&query=vests&page=1&pa=square&view=captioned_thumbs&sort=best

http://www.ravelry.com/projects/BuenaSuerte/blanket
?????

not sure this is what you are after, but do a search for Kaffe Fassett and look at his designs. free form and color work are two words that I would definitely used to describe his styles.
