Morning all. I just was wondering if the cocoon's are really used by the new mom's and babies? Do babies like them?
Would love some feedback. Thank you in advance

I knitted a cocoon for my neices new born last winter and she loved it, although baby Harry was soon wanting to get his arms out. For the time she used it, it was great, but he outgrew it quite soon. The one I did is on ravelry and is called a baby cozy. It has buttons at the neck and along the bottom for easy access.

Hi my knitting group was asked to make cocoons and or blankets last winter for an organization, hospital new born units. We donated quite a few. Then they called two weeks ago toask for more. They are coming to collect tomorrow Tuesday, the 14th. They promised to bring us some treats. :)

Awesome..what pattern did you group use, what a great donation. I work at an inner city hospital, I use up bits and pieces of skeins for caps in the nursery.

I had wondered the same thing. I knitted one for my first ggs and never heard whether it was used or not. The pattern I used did not have an opening at the bottom, so to change diapers, you would have to totally remove the baby from it. After I had done it, I thought it was not a good idea. Second ggs is on the way and I am making him a blanket.

I always worry that the baby will slip down into it and not be able to breathe.

I prefer the ones with arms so that can't happen. Babies like to be swaddled so these do serve a function.

I'd be interested in knowing which pattern you used.

I also wondered if they were used by the new parents.

I have made many of this pattern (http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/owlie-sleep-sack) and have been used by everyone but my daughter-in-law. I do not assign that to the fact that it was the sleep sack as she didn't use any of the knitted items I sent for my first grandchild. :) We'll see how she does with the next one!

But yes! They love them. I know one would slide her baby into one after each bath to keep him warm until he was lotioned and dressed.

I wish our hospital had not done away with the OB/nursery departments. I made two cocoons and they will become cat snuggies as soon as I go to the craft store to get a couple of macrame rings to keep the opening open. I recently saw a crochet pattern which made the baby look like a flower blooming. Looked so cute. But I passed it up since there are no babies to crochet for.
Many of the cocoon patterns look adorable for photo shoots.

I knitted one for my GGD. She was a premie and needed to be kept swatled to keep her body temp level. I made a wide ribbing at the top. At first the ribbing was folded down all the way but as she grew it was unfolded. The last time it was used the top of the ribbing was under her arm pits. Mom loved that it kept her blankets around her and she loved that she was secure. She slept better in it, too.

Enjoy your fiber arts,

I have made and gifted several of these and the feedback is 100% they love them. Make the one with the drawstring at the bottom, makes nappy changes easy for mom or dad. don't forget the matching cap.

I recently made the flower cocoon and will post a picture of it as soon as I can find a baby doll to place in it. This was a request by a friend after she saw the picture on facebook. After a while and much help from kp I found the pattern and purchased it.........what a rip off, the pattern has obviously been translated and unless you are able to knit and crochet well it was really difficult to understand the written instructions..... or maybe it was just me :(
