i just saw a picture of a drop-dead gorgeous shawl, and the person who made it said she might not even wear it.

that made me think of all the times i "saved" something for a "special occasion". we are not guaranteed any time here. each day is special because it will never come again.

i have become an advocate of using special things any day. so i can wear a beautiful shawl, even if i am walking around the house in my pajamas. i can use a treasured cup for my tea. i can put on cologne, even if i am not leaving the house. anything that brings joy should be right there, handy, ready.

there is enough in life that robs us of joy. bad health, bad news, bad environment, bad blood, bad finances, bad government... if there is something that lifts us even a little, i say "let us be lifted!"

Well, I'm with you Phoenix Fire. And I think we should use our best china and silverware and crystal for our families often, not save them for visitors we may see once or twice a year.

My Grannie used to make us use the linen tablecloth and napkins, the "good" china, the crystal glassware, and the "real" silver table service EVERY Sunday, whether we were having "company" or not.
She would tell us that the family gathering for dinner was an occasion that was "special" enough to be treated like a celebration.

Yeah, verily! My mother 'put up' things she considered too nice for daily living. Thought it was wrong as a child and also now.

After my mother-in-law died at the age of 98, I helped my sister-in-law sort through her belongings. We found boxes of beautiful linens, some embroidered by hand, including a lovely tablecloth and napkins.
She had been saving them " for good", as she put it.
How sad that in her 98 years no occasion in her life was considered "good" enough to use those things. How sad that she never let herself or her family enjoy them.
If we have such beautiful things, let us lavish them on our family and friends, the people we love the most.

I don't use my good China because it has to be hand washed. Guess that means I'm lazy.

I so agree with using all those 'special' goodies we save. I really took a look at my life after having cancer and realized how short life can be. I told my husband to sell our living room furniture and buy a beautiful pool table to place in that room. We rarely sat in that room, always saving it for company. I have a family room so 2 sitting rooms weren't necessary. I use my good China, glasses, etc. daily. I wear the clothes and shoes I buy right away.
When my parents passed away, all those things my Mom saved were given away because no one wanted them. Broke my heart.
We become enlightened as we age. Give those things you treasure to someone who will also treasure and use them. Enjoy the things you have now. Oh, and start thinning out the junk so your family doesn't have to haul it away when you're gone.
