I am trying to make this sweater

http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/baby-lace-cardigan-3?buy=1

- the pattern says that the body should be 152 stitches but then when it says to divide for front , sleeves and back the numbers add up to 172 stitches - any thought on which numbers are wrong??

After you knit the first set up row for the lace pattern, it says you have 173 st. (RS)
Hope that helps .... just read slightly further in the pattern.

This pattern is also written in Turkish...total numbers add up to 172...same as English version. See where another person questioned same problem but didn't see reply from designer. Good luck.

This is your answer. The set up row for the lace increases the number of stitches to 173.
When you divide. 31+30+51+30+31=173
Pattern is correct.
Don't forget that after you finish the sleeves and you join the fronts and back, you need to cast on 10 stitches for each underarm.

No.
Look at the picture.
You started at the neck in garter stitch.
On row 7 (after three ridges) make a buttonhole
Continue in garter stitch increasing as directed until you have 152 stitches.
NOW you quit garter stitch and begin the lace pattern.
Follow the lace set up row and you will increase to 173 stitches in ONE row. After the set up rows you will follow the chart for the lace.
Look at the picture again. Along the way you will make another buttonhole and divide for the body and sleeves.
You will put the fronts and back on stitch holders while you knit the sleeves.
When the sleeves are complete you join the fronts and back to complete the sweater.

This is the standard method for knitting a top down sweater. Top down means you start at the neck and finish at the lower edge.

Hi,
I was confused also.
Where was the garter stitch on the neck edge? I always use ribbing of k1p1 until I started the increases. I'm going to copy it to my printer tomorrow after my ink is installed. Bea
