I am knitting a pair of 'pirate' socks as requested by my brother. He wants orange/yellow one inch stripe sequence knee high's. I'm doing the cuff in 2/2 rib which he would like to measure 3 inches. Does that mean I should make the ribbed cuff 6 inches and he folds it in half or 3 inches and he folds it down onto the stocking stitch? My initial thought was 6 inches but now I'm wondering why! I can't find a free pattern to check this out.
What do my fellow KP'ers think?

I think three inches shoud be sufficient.

Your choice. No laws about cuff lengths, only matters that they fit the person you knit them for.

Remembering way back to high school days. Socks stayed up better without folding them over. If you want to hide an inch wide elastic band to hold them up folding them over makes hiding a perfect hiding spot for the elastic.

They will be folded but I'm not sure it the ribbing should be folded in half thus needing 6 inches or just 3 inches folded down on to stocking stitch.

Maybe you should ask your brother for his preference. It seems to me the ribbing is more stretchy, so it might be a matter of which he would rather have.

You know your brother, is he a turn the cuff over type of person?

Why not ask him before you get too far along

Oh this bought back memories of having 'garters' to hold my socks up.

sure.....I knit eastern european continental...there is very little difference in the movement of my fingers between knit and purl...I actually knit rib just as fast as plain knit... They just fit better and hug the leg. It was just a suggestion....whatever you and he are happy with is great.
