Does anyone have any tips for turning a pullover sweater pattern into a cardigan pattern? I have a pattern for a sweater I LOVE but never wear pullover sweaters anymore as they make me claustrophobic for some reason. But I'm sure I'd ruin the sweater pattern if I tried turning it into a cardigan so wonder if anyone has any experience with this. The sweater does have a tree outline against a lighter sky with stars in it so in my mind that makes it all the more complicated to divide the front into two pieces so it becomes a cardigan. Unf, it is not a free pattern so I can't show it here but it is a average everyday pullover sweater shape. Thank you for any wisdom you can send my way.

I knit the back and sleeves as the pattern says then i divide the front in hallf and work out if the pattern fits on that number of stitches. Then i do a right and left side, when i have finished them,i knit the two facings, thenthen the neck band hope that helps.

Try to identify the middle of your pull over, convert it into maybe a rib pattern or garter stitch pattern as you like as front panel. Btw always read to understand your pattern first before changing them, and ofcourse, use a few similar sweater/cardigans pattern to refer. =)

This is what I'd do too except that I really dislike side seams. So, I'd divide the front and work it out so that I knit from the right front, around the back, and then the left front. I make all of my cardigans like this, on a circular needle. Then the only seaming is for setting in the sleeves, if any, and the shoulder seams.

Hello,
I'm new to Knitting Paradise (yesterday). I'm also new at knitting but I tend to be the kind of person that wants to change everything so I kind of work things out. So just use what I say below as "food for thought" not as the correct thing to do with out further investigation.
Yesterday, I found a pattern that had a video that turned a pull-over into a cardigan... but it is an existing sweater knitted in the round. (see link below) You could complete your front piece with pattern and then use this process. You may have to add one more column in the middle of your tree so you can divide that column. This however, would put a solid ribbing down the middle of your tree. If you wanted to have the tree pattern integrated into the ribbing you would have to take off columns from the middle of the pattern so you could put them into the button hole band. If you plan to keep it closed all the time then the button band can be solid but if you plan to ever have it open you would have to make the tree pattern there too. But remember not to take the columns from that side of the body's pattern or it will make the tree look funny when buttoned...maybe just do the same as the button hole band... the tree would be extra wide when unbuttoned but just right when buttoned.
I hope you don't mind me sending what I would do but remember I'm just starting to knit. It would be fun to see the finished product. Have fun. http://www.knitpicks.com/patterns/Classic_Lines_Cardigan_Pattern__D50745220.html then click on the video tab offered to the right of the description tab.
