After putting a Pom Pom on my grandsons hat my daughter said she liked the hats I am making better with them. No I am not going to add them to all the hats that are already done, but I do want them especially on the ones made with bulky yarn. This is my problem I want them to be fluffier then the ones on my worsted knit ones (see picture below). Using this pompom maker which ring or rings should I use.

I’m not a big Pom Pom fan, but those hats look great with them.

Me either ! So that’s why I am not adding them to the about 300 hats that are already to deliver.

Just the outer ring or with the pink ring together. I want them to be very fluffy not compact like the smaller ones.

Or go to you tube and there are many ways to make one without a Pom Pom maker. You can use your hand, cardboard, etc.

Pom pom makers come in different sizes depending on how wide you want it. If you want to make your own template, you can use this:

sizes from small to large
and if you want xlarge:

When I made them, I wrapped yarn around cardboard and tied one side and
cut the other. The longer the strands, the fluffier is the rule of thumb, I think.

Hi, I have been asked to add pom poms to several of my hats. Recently, I posted one I knitted for my GD, who wanted a fluffy pom pom. Is this the look you want? If so, I used my fingers to make it. Very easy, just check on you tube.

Before I could afford a pom pom maker, we cut circles of heavy cardboard for the size we wanted. They were used the same as the commercial tools and worked just as well. To make fluffy pom poms, we used a blunt needle and frayed the ends.

I'd use the outer ring with the middle ring. I make lots of hats and put pompoms on some but not others. Some hats seem to need them and others don't.

The rings determine the size, not how fluffy. Don’ t use as much yarn and your Pom Pom will be looser and more fluffy.

Do you mean fluffier or puffier? More wraps, the fatter, less wraps the looser.

Use the two outer rings together. This will give you the long strand you need for a lager pompom. Removing the smallest ring will give you a little more inner space for an extra row of wraps. I use a metal yarn needle to wind the yarn around the circles and 2 to 3 yards of yarn to make a good size pompom. Extra if needed.
Use a very strong thinner yarn(Caron simply soft is good) to tie the pompom and do a double wrap over knot, also known as a surgeons or A&P knot for the first one as then it will not loosen. Pull the ends as hard as you can.

Well here the hat. I am not sure if I like this Pom Pom. This is made with chunky yarn. Basically a tube with decreases at the top. Because of the rolled brim and the stretch it should fit just about any child. I will try for a fluffier one on the next hat.
