What’s a fun, self striping, baby proof yarn to use for a traditional Baby Surprise Jacket? Any suggestions please? It will be my first attempt so nothing too expensive but it is so hard to imagine how all these multi coloured yarns are going to actually knit up.

Ulrika has done a number of BSJ's using Caron Cakes... the long color stripes yarn
I imagine almost any of those yarns (and there are many now) that are machine washable would be good
Look thru her projects: http://www.knittingparadise.com/user-profile?usernum=26593

I have friends who say good things about Mariner yarns: https://www.marrineryarns.com/knitting-yarns/ and they are very inexpensive. Stylecraft has some nices ones: https://www.stylecraft-yarns.co.uk/Baby+Collection/0_caea526.htm Deramores, Woolwearhouse and most other suppliers have it. There is also Ice Yarns from Turkey: https://www.yarn-paradise.com/products/q.85-543#

Thanks, some nice colourways here. It’s so hard to choose online and my lys doesn’t stock a great choice.

Plymouth Encore is my go-to yarn for baby items. Should work great for a BSJ. In fact, I’m sure I’ve used it during my BSJ phase!

self-striping yarns work wonderfully on stocking caps knit in the round, but are a horror in working cable sweaters-matching at the side seams is a complicated proposition. I knit a self-striping hat for the hub in shades of grey and brown, which he loves to wear every day.

I used sock yarn, size 3 needles (ca. 6sts/inch) for BSJ for my grandchildren. Jackets were cute as can be, washed well. My girls asked for more so they obviously were a hit. As the GBs grew, I changed to larger needles and worsted weight yarns.

I’ve been stalking your BSJ’s through a previous post here! They are fabulous and you must be quite the expert! The Caron cakes looks fun - I need to check out availability in the UK. Is worsted the best weight to use for a baby size?

ETA Wool Warehouse stock Caron Cakes and it is on sale at the moment too. What colourway is the one in your post here please?

I like bernat pop or premier cake yarn I like all cake yarns who am I kidding (odd balls of yarn work too quite well)
Grab in your yarnbox/bag and use what ever you grab first be adventurous just for the record I read in one of EZ's books that she thought fall colors looked best on babies not pastels that made them look pale and frail.

I just ordered my first Caron Cakes yarn. When you make the BSJ, do you have to cut the yarn or can you just keep going with it all in one piece? I ordered three skeins and thought I would just make an afghan, but I may change my mind now. How many skeins for the BSJ?
