If you go up in needle size, you will surely get even fewer stitches per inch. When knitting a gauge swatch, it should always be at least 6x6 inches in size, with the outer edge stitches in garter stitch... Measure the 4x4 inches in the center of the swatch. The edge stitches can give you misinformation, which is why you make a larger than desired area to check gauge.

Yup! Done all that with garter stitch border! It’s a mystery as to why having gone down a needle size I actually got fewer stitches. I normally need to go down a size as I’m obviously a loose knitter.....never got fewer stitches before. And the same thing happened twice so not a fluke?

Are the two needles the same material? Do you have a needle gauge to measure your needle, maybe something is miss marked, because going down in needle size should make smaller stitches, which would mean more stitches per inch, not less.

Yes; as I was so surprised by the result on smaller needles I actually did a second swatch on a different set of 4.5mm needles and got the same result.....
I’m so puzzled that I have even used two different needle gauges to check the sizes! Daft of course because I know the gauges are accurate or I would have had this problem before. It’s just weird!

See how 4mm will work. Probably the first attempt with the 5mm was "off"...

Check needle guage. Learned recently that many needle brands differ in size.

Thanks, I have Knitpro interchangeables which all seem to conform to size. As I say, this has never happened to me before!
