Can anyone explain why there is one stitch outside the pattern repeat on this chart please.
I have 217 stitches which divides perfectly by 7 but I’m reading this as a 6 stitch repeat.
I’m quite new to charts and colourwork so any help would be much appreciated please.

you are correct, this is a 6 stitch repeat. So you will first do the single stitch and then you will do the repeat 36 times around. (6x36=216 stitches plus the one lone stitch = 217)

It is a 6 stitch repeat and has a + 1 to complete the patterning.

If you look at the colour sequencing, if you used all 7 stitches each time, stitch 1 and stitch 7 are the same so you would have a double column that would throw off the pattern.

I think you may have your answer but here is what I think...the repeat is 6 not 7...217 divides perfectly by 6 with 1 left over which is the single stitch at the beginning of the chart...
You start with that stitch then the 6 stitches inside the line are the repeat...the same as when a lace pattern repeat is inside ().
Hope this helps.
Have fun.

Great to have at least 2 excuses...I use the age thing all the time...can’t claim to be blonde but I’ve been grey since I was 29 and now I’m almost 77...almost the same...
Sometimes it is just nice to get another opinion...as long as you don’t end up with too many different opinions...
Have fun.
