I am disappointed in this yarn. The colours are outstanding and the finished product has a nice 'hand', but I had to watch closely as I knit because the yarn splits easily. On washing the water was totally coloured from the dye coming out. It took a number of rinses, including with vinegar, before the dye stopped running. Interested in hearing from others who have used this yarn.
I made three hats with it worked with white wool so I prewashed it. It definitely bled and I did vinegar too. Only a tiny amount of color came out in the blocking soak and the white stayed white thankfully.
I don’t recall it being splitty, perhaps that changes with individual balls. I have been waiting over a year for my LYS to get more in because a few more people want hats.
Had I knitted it up and stained something or not expected the colors to run I would certainly have been upset and it was a bit more hassle than I wanted but I still like the yarn.
I have used it in the past and some balls were better than others where splitting is concerned. I did have the colors bleed quite a bit too. Like you, I do enjoy the finished product.
I have 2 of these balls of yarn. I was thinking of selling them.
All really good info as I've long thought I'd like the yarn because so love the colors. However, not thrilled to hear it bleeds that much. Hate to invest in a yarn I have to mess with in order for it to turn out the way I want. Learn a lot here, will keep watching in case someone indicates they had a really positive experience.
This is my DH’s favorite yarn for socks and I’ve used it several times over the past few years. I prefer needles with a very sharp point but haven’t had much trouble with splits. The colors are vibrant and a little overdye in the rinse water is to be expected. It’s not a forever problem so I don’t mind. The yarn has 25% nylon and wears really well which is great because DH is hard on socks.
I have found changing needles makes a remarkable difference with yarn splitting. Blunt tips vs lace tips and wood vs steel needles. Slippery pointed Needles seem to work best at least for me.
I made a pair of socks with it and it was a miracle they got done. The ball I had not only was splitty (is that a real word 😊) but it also had many thin spots in it. I have sworn off this brand of yarn, regardless of how much I love their colors.
I love Zauberball! Sometimes there is "crocking" of the dyes used. I like to use a small amount of synthrapol in the water to prevent bleeding if using contrasting colors.
If there is extra color expelled, I don't get my knickers in a twist unless it washes out completely.
A little pricey for me but they are pretty.
I made one pair of socks with this yarn and loved it. I didn't have any trouble with it splitting, but I usually don't have trouble with yarn splitting. I did not wash the socks, but gave them away. I'll have to tell my DIL to watch out for that. I have since bought 3 more balls-hope it all works out for me!!!
I made two pairs of socks with this yarn, and they are my favorites to wear. I need to make some more. The dye probably came out at first, but now they goin the washer in a mesh bag and hung to dry. They get washed at least once per week, and this has been going on for years. Great yarn.
I really like Zauberball Crazy! I can see how the yarn could be split easily but have not really had problems with that. I use size 2.25 mm Addi Rockets which are sharp and smooth. The colors are lovely and it makes great socks. I have made a shawl with it and it worked well. Fortunately, not a shawl that needed stretching since the nylon content precludes that. My only problem is that I can’t see to count the rows in the marled areas when I knit socks. My daughter’s Christmas socks were “interesting” as in totally unmatched in length! For those of you who want completely matching socks in color sequence, this is not your yarn! Having knit several balls of it I know the impossibility of matching color sequences. My socks are siblings, not identical twins.
Love this yarn. I’ve never had a problem with it.
