I’ve said time and time again, NO MORE SOCKS. But here I go… pattern calls for fingering yarn, can I use 2 strands of lace or no?

do a wraps per inch or (better) a swatch.
Of more concern (IMO) is the fiber .... socks need some nylon and fibers that will take heavy wear and stress

A percentage of nylon really increases the durability and life of the sock. You would have to swatch, in the round, to see if you get gauge for a fingereing weight pattern with 2 strands of lace weight. Another concern would be laundering. Sock yarn is made with super wash wool. Will the recipients of your socks want to hand wash them? I don’t knit socks for other people anymore, and only made them for those related by blood or marriage. Now I’m selfish, and only knit them for me.

I would not call that selfish! Most people have no idea what hand made socks are worth, whether they are washable or not. Who wants to put in time or money for people who truly cannot appreciate the effort?

I didn't know these things about sock yarn when I started and have some pretty shrunken socks and some that have not lasted so well. I recently made some socks with mostly appropriate yarn and with a little decoration of pure alpaca yarn which I pre-washed in a way to pre-shrink it. I hope that will work.
