Is there an easier way to increase the toe in the Toe Up socks. I am having a heck of a time doing the M1L and M1R. Especially the M1R. It is almost impossible to get the needle through that angle. I am following Liat Gat's pattern. She makes it look easy, but mine is not easy to get the needle around the angle easily. Any suggestions would be much appreciated. Thanks
For me, the answer is in the point of the needles. I have found Chiaogoo to have nice sharp points and so much easier to do the M1L and M1R increases. I knit socks with a US 1.
I don't know which pattern you are following, but I like to have an extra stitch between the increases. So it is k1, M1L, knit stitches, M1R, k1, k1, M1L, knit stitches, M1R, k1 and then k the next round.
I make a backwards loop cast on and then in the next row, I knit it through the trailing loop, making a second twist in the stitch. It looks like one leg of a stitch so it's a gently sloping increase so it doesn't matter whether it is left or right.
Yes! This is my new, favorite toe increase. You always know whether to YO or KBL when you come to the increase stitch. And looks very nice & neat! Try it. You'll love it!
I use the kfb, it is not as pretty, but with the small stitches and at the toe, it is not that much of a difference. I also cast on 12-16 stitches on each needle to start because I like a wider toe to start, so have less increase rounds for my toe box.
My weekly knitting teacher, who has been teaching knitting for over 50 years, says she only does a regular M1 and not the left and right - says you really cannot tell and not worth the trouble. Really changed my thinking on that one. Besides, who is going to look that close?
