Thanks to everyone who replied. I ripped everything starting from the beginning. I used to knit sweaters 30 years ago. Not anything fancy. Now in my sixties I'm finding that I might not have the patience to go through this. I did try to ladder down and fix but just lost other stitches beside the stitches I was trying to fix.

Crochet hooks can be your best friends. If it’s a simple pattern then ladder down and work them back up. If it’s a complex pattern leave it alone. You’re likely the only one who will ever notice it.
