Took shorthand in HS and also in college; but never used in much in any of my office jobs. Used it to take notes in shorthand in all the other classes I took. Also practiced my shorthand whenever I could while listening to records & tv programs. I still have two text books & every now & then I will look through them again to see how much I can still read/remember. I think it would help your brain to do that the same way crosswords & puzzles do.

Took the college course in high school but added shorthand and typing during my studies. Quit shorthand after a week, couldn't take the pressure!

A funny story about shorthand. I worked in a very small grocery store. One evening, a newly married man came into the store with a grocery list. When he opened it, his wife had purposely written the list in shorthand thinking he would have to call her to get what she wanted. I took that list and was able to send him home with everything she had requested. The joke was on her!

I am looking for a CD or something that will read to me on the computer so that I can refresh my Gregg Shorthand skills. I took Shorthand in both high school and vocational college being trained for the Mayo Clinic, but that "skill" is pretty lame in me now. SO.........if anyone knows where I can get that kind of disk........etc. so I can practice that would be great. I found, even in my younger days, that shorthand was so very helpful practice for the mind.

Thanks for any information pointing me to a source.

I learned in high school in the 60s. In fact just ran across my certificates for 40, 60, 80 and 100 wpm for 3 minutes of dictation that were stored at my old house in which my son lived.

I still use shorthand when taking notes as my boss walks by saying "By the way, we need this, this and this done with these provisions...." Can still read it. :-)

Sorry I can't offer any other suggestions as to how to learn it and pick up speed. I used to practice writing down commercials to build speed. I remember my teacher, Ms.Dolezal, telling us we wouldn't need the higher speeds as most bosses don't talk that fast.

I used to leave Christmas gift lists, done in Gregg shorthand, right out on the table. Used to drive my kids nuts! But that was soooo long ago. The only thing I remember now is "dear sir."

Sometimes you can find the book in used book stores or perhaps a thrift shop that deals with books..Or go to one of the discount sites that deals in books. I don't know about the audio tapes though..

I, too, still do as nsoldriver. I used it to take my notes while in college 60 years ago. As I transcribed them, it reinforced the info. I still Use my finger to write names and things I want to remember.

Both my parents knew Pitman shorthand. They would write notes to each other using it. Drove my brother and I nuts.
