When you start the decreases, you will decrease 1 st at the neck edge on every row. You will decrease at the armhole edge on every other row. You will shape the piece in this manner until you have decreased the numbers of sts in the brackets, depending on the size you are making.

For your 5 rows:

1st row-- dec at the armhole edge and also the neck edge
2nd row-- dec at the neck edge only
3rd row-- same as row 1
4th row--same as row 2
5th row-- same as row 1

They should have told you what kind of dec to use somewhere else in the pattern. If not, work a K2tog for a right leaning dec, or a SKP for a left leaning dec.

This would be correct for the right front, if that's what you are working on. For better looking decs, try using k2tog at the beginning of the rows and skp at the ends of the rows. This will keep your decs leaning towards the body of the piece, which looks better than when they lean away from it.

It's just a fine point, tho.

skp means 'slip, knit, pass'. I actually just k2tog through the back loops and it comes out the same as skp.

Also if your pattern is stockinette, you need to do P2tog or SPP on the purl rows.
