Now that I know I can use a fairisle pattern as a double bed jacquard, I have a few questions.
1. if I want to go from ribbing to DBJ, is it best to start on waste yarn and then add the ribbing after?
2. If I am using 2 color DBJ, do I double the amount of rows that the pattern calls for?
3. Will neck and shoulder shaping be done on just the main bed as usual? Thank you in advance for any input.

1) Knit the rib then take the heel of each stitch to make your work become full needle rib.

2) You are not doubling the amount of rows but you are doubling the amount of carriage passes as two carriage passes knits one row.
You must do a tension swatch first in the DJ technique you want to use. Your DJ swatch measurements will be totally different in width and length than it would be doing normal Fairisle knitting.

3) Neck and shoulder shaping is done differently because you need to decrease both main bed and ribber stitches.

When I do a garment in one of the DJ techniques I never use a written pattern because I use the garment creation in my Brother KH970 and in the past a Knitleader or a Knitradar. This makes it easier to do as you are not trying to knit a swatch to match the requirements that a written pattern has.

When doing shoulder and neck shaping I usually take the ribber bed stitches that need to be decreased up to the main bed stitches then decrease both main bed and the transferred ribber bed stitches together. If you are knitting the Bird's Eye DJ you must keep the ribber bed needles as an even number and always have the outer needles on the main bed.

ETA......The following link showing how to do the Ladder Backed DJ technique will probably help you. Doing Ladder Backed doesn't make your swatch measurement that much different than doing Fairisle..... but you will still have to make a swatch and adjust whatever pattern you are using to match it.

When swatching, try the rib and the DBJ on the same swatch. You might not like the effect as the rib could be thinner than the DBJ. You may need to have the rib doubled as in a hem, or start with plain colour full needle rib.
