I am a blind knitter with sixty years of knitting behind me. However, this happens to be my first project using self-striping yarn. I am using the yarn and color recommended in the pattern. When I made the second sleeve, I was told by a sighted friend that the sequence of color changes did not match those in the first sleeve. Must I begin by finding the place in the new skein which matches the beginning of the first sleeve or are such patterns as the Silver Birch Cardigan, which are made for self-striping yarn, based on asymmetrical color changes?

I have knitted with this wool before and I didnt match it up as I found it a very interesting piece of work. It is entirely up to the individual though. My friend also knitted with this wool and wasted quite a bit by doing a match up. To be honest I thought my random stripes looked better. Happy knitting. xx

Some people will leave the colours alone, while others will match them.
Will the item be for a customer or a donation?
If a customer, maybe ask & see what they prefer.

Pictures on patterns don't have matching colour sequences, so it's simply personal preference.
Trying to match the colour sequence on sleeves can often waste a lot of yarn, and the same applies to cardigans if the knitter wants the 2 fronts to match as well as the sleeves.

Thanks so much for your replies. I feel much better. I wonder which way the designer, Rae Blackledge, would go on this. I've already matched up my sleeves but I think the extra yarn I have would make lovely cowls in the same pattern. Thanks.

I've gone both ways. Depended entirely upon for whom the item was intended. And received no more compliments for the items for which I wasted so much yarn than for than complaints for the items which I just left whopper-jilly. Do it however you feel works best for you and your circumstance.

Hello, Butterfly53, I plan to use every inch of this yarn in one way or other. I did match the sleeves but will leave the fronts and the back as they come. I also thank Bees for sharing the Ravelry link to the pattern, which I forgot to do because I'm new here.

That is a lovely cardigan. I would maybe have matched the sleeves, but not that exact. I do like some things to match, but others not so much.

Welcome to KP!

I really like this pattern, especially because the striping is vertical. So many are horizontal and not flattering for me. Thank you for sharing. I just added it to my Ravelry favorites.

Thanks for posting the link, beaz. I've been searching for a cardigan to make for my daughter, and think this might work. She would need one of the larger sizes, and I think the vertical "stripes" would be quite flattering. I'm thinking of using a yarn without noticeable stripes, because I am kind of a nut about "matching".

Wonder why there are not projects on the pattern page on Ravelry. I went to look to see what others have done. I think it is up to you whether you do matching or random sleeves.

I personally wouldn't worry about matching the stripes exactly.

Can you use straight needles? I don't have circular needles in this size.
