Hi there, I am wondering if I can knit a small child's cardigan with 8ply wool following a 4 ply pattern? What will the results be?
I have just picked up the needles for the first time in 15 years and looking forward to it. The other issue is the pattern uses circular kneedles- a first for me.
Thanks
Shona

Welcome to Knitting Paradise, Shona!

If you want to make a "a small child's cardigan" but are using yarn half the thickness ... the result done on the same size needles as in the pattern will be very loosey-goosey and possibly too shapeless for use. If done on finer needles - more in keeping with the yarn you want to use, it'll probably be far too small for your intended recipient. If you don't have anyone you intend it for, go for it! At worst, it'll fit a doll, and you'll have learned something while dusting off your knitting skills.

As for using straights, unless the pattern specifies that it is knit in the round, or that there are umpteen-hundred stitches at some point in construction, use the straight needles.

Enjoy!

Thank you Jessica -Jean. I mistakenly purchased 8ply wool and the pattern I selected is actually for 4 ply wool. Should I abandon ship on this pattern and get one that is for the right wool? I am knitting for my son's wee God daughter who will be 2 this winter.
Thanks
Shona

Since you are just starting back you don't want a lot of problems to put you off. You want it to be an enjoyable knit. I made a big mistake in picking something plain and boring for my first knit back and it almost put me off again.
I would get a new pattern that you like and is correct for your yarn. I would also pick one that uses straight needles if that's what you are used to.
You can be more experimental later when back in the swing.

If you knit with the 8ply wool using the 4ply pattern it will turn out too big, you would have to go over the pattern and 1/2 the stitches and the increasing and decreasing. I would get a pattern for the 8ply wool or go and get 4ply wool.

Deedidi,
I have always used the term "Loosey-goosey" and thought everyone did! I also use the term "catywhompish" to mean oh out of sorts or crooked. Caty-cornered to mean 45 degree angle. Don't know where these terms came from, but others also use them, and I am from and live in California.

I agree about straight vs circs. Unless you have a large amount of stitches for this project straights are probably better

Good advise, thanks.
