I used to work for a knitting store owned by a very knowledgeable lady, who had worked with fibers for many years. Her statement was that acrylic yarn is made to be machine washed and dried. It self-blocks in the heat, and will return to its original shape. You are wise not to hang your sweater--especially when it's drying because its own weight will cause it to stretch. Happily, acrylic fiber has quite a memory, and a simple machine wash and dry should solve your problem.
