This pattern is over 80 years old. It's knit in strips and fun to do because if you have several people who knit with similar gauge each can do a few. Then the strips are crocheted and sewn together. Here's how: (use size 10 needles). Cast on 29 sts. 1st row: K2, YO, K4, K2 tog twice, K4, YO, K1, YO, K4, K2 tog twice, K4, YO, K2.
2nd row: Purl across 3rd row: Knit across. Repeat these 3 rows until strip measures 60". Last pattern whould have stockinette st. on right side, same as first pattern. Bind off. Work 6 more strips...to make an afghan 48 x 60 inches. With a contrasting color work 1 single crochet in each st on both lengthwise edges--not lower or top edges. With afghan color work single crochet in each stitch of previous rows--use same tension so strips are uniform length. Sew strips together with overhand stitch. This takes 34 ozs. of main color and 2 oz. of contrast color...size 5 crochet hook and size 10 knitting needles.
When my mom was alive she, my sister and I made several or these! Great memories!

Thank you for the pattern and the great photo.

I have yet to make this, but I did buy - in a second-hand shop - one like it, with the intention of copying it. The one I got is done with fine baby-weight yarn ... miles and miles of it! Now, I don't need to deconstruct the stitch pattern!

Thank you!

I have also made this pattern, but instead of making strips, I make it on a circular needle and keep on casting on, putting markers between every pattern. This way there are no strips to put together, just one big blanket. Everyone loves this blankets and they are beautiful...just as yours' is.

lThat is a great idea, I only made it twice as I don't like sewing the strips together. I mostly made afghans and sweaters since I started knitting. Now I am doing smaller things such as slippers and scarves. I've been collecting baby patterns and have plans to try some of the cute things I have seen here, soon.

I cast on 40 stitches (that is how many stitches my pattern uses), put on a marker, cast on another 40, put on a marker, cast on another 40, etc. Unitl I get it to the width I want it. I work each pattern between the markers. This way I don't have strips to sew together, just one big blanket. I hope I made this clear, I'm not very good at explaining. :)

Ditto! I have added the pattern to my long list of "to-do" items. I do not like sewing strips together, therefore I will chart the pattern to knit with circular needles. ;-)

this is how I do one of my favorite blanket s called Hostess afghan. It is cables and popcorn stitch pattern with garter stitch between the panels,. Much easier to just make it into one piece with all that knitting.it also takes less time and no sewing toetther of the panels.

The only large knitting project my mother started--she never finished it--was in alternate stripes--Kelly green and yellow. The green was in basketweave and the yellow was in cable. It would have been lovely. I thought it would be nice to make one but the scope is beyond me. That's much worse than the single socks syndrome! With abandoned afghan squares you can do something with them. With single socks yu can put a bar of soap in them and gift people with a "soap sock." I have just solved one of the world's larger problems and before the coffee was done too.
