Does anyone have this type of swift?
If you've used the Amish & umbrella swift, which do you prefer- why?
I'm thinking about the Amish swift. I've never used any - only seen umbrella ones in the shops.

I've been looking at videos on the Amish swift and like the simplicity of it.

EDIT:
So thinking about it more- the umbrella swift would adjust to the size of the hank as it's getting smaller- correct?
And with the Amish- when the hank gets smaller I would need to stop and rearrange the pegs- correct or no?

Amish swift for me, personally. Had umbrella swift - never again. Couldn't even give it away! Others may prefer it but not me.
Amish swift is simple, doesn't collapse, and easily stored. But to each his own.

I have an umbrella Swift but have friends who tell me they like the Amish better.
Whichever you use be sure to get the hank onto the swift without twisting it.

Love mine! Easy to store and set up. Very affordable which was a plus because I splurged on the ball winder and got a Stanwood that can take a very large skein of yarn.

I like an umbrella swift, mostly because I can make little or big. I dye a small amount of yarn from time to time, so it works fore. But I have heard wonderful things about Amish Swift's.

which one are you talking about?

Amish swift all the way! In a recent thread on KP, I described how my Amish swift helped me untangle a badly wrapped series of hanks. By using one of the longer pins in the center pivot place, I could wind a cake of yarn from a paper towel roll.

I have an umbrella swift from Webs and I love it. Leave it up all the time, takes a tine footprint and is ready when I am.

Does it do what I asked in my original post- under edit?
I don't know if the umbrella closes in as the swift gets smaller but on the Amish you don't adjust the size you start with. The yarn stays put until you get to the end

I bought an Amish swift after reading the pros and cons of both types on KP. It works great for me. And I do not have to adjust the pegs as the hank gets smaller.

Hi Anita, I have had an umbrella swift but much prefer my Amish swift. Neither of them need any adjusting as the hank is unwinding.
Perhaps my umbrella swift was faulty, but it was constantly collapsing as I was winding my yarn. I had everything tightened as much as I could. I found it very frustrating so I purchased an Amish swift.
I have never had a single problem with it. Hope this helps !

Yes Adrienne, this does help, thank you :)

I own a large wooden swift -Glimakra is the brand.
No, you don’t adjust it after you are partly done winding - the circumference of the hank doesn’t really change as you wind. You are taking yarn from the outside edge of the circle of yarn, but your swift was adjusted firmly to the inside diameter. The same is true with an Amish style swift, which I have used at a friend’s house.
I have a small wooden cart on wheels. I keep the swift and the ball winder set up on that. I can easily move it out of the living room when needed, but usually it sits next to the chair where I knit. I would find setting up and then taking down an Amish swift less convenient, as I don’t have a spare table where I could leave it set up.

I have an umbrella swift and really like it. It can accommodate different hank sizes. When winding one hank, no adjustments are made or needed during the winding. The thickness of the hank doesn’t make enough of a difference.
