Hello Ladies (and Gents),

I need some advice. My mom is going through chemo. She was told she would lose her hair in the next 2 weeks. She lives in San Diego where it is pretty warm. She is also on Morphine which makes her feel hot most of the time. I want to make her a hat. I am at a loss as to which fiber to use? Will Cotton or silk or bamboo hold its shape or will it be a sloppy mess. I bought some Ella Rae bamboo silk but it sheds insanely! I looked on Ravelry and lots of people complained about the shedding! I would so appreciate your advice!

I have used Knit Picks Stroll yarn. It is cotton plus modal. It is very soft and machine washable and dry able. I think cotton needs to have something else withi it to prevent stretching out of shape.

I hope your mom does well with her treatments.

Even in San Diego, it gets cool in the winter months and without hair for the first time, she will appreciate a cap/hat to protect her head.

She's also on Ravelry: deheadhuggers (She's in Delaware, I believe). Lots of free patterns for chemo caps and she almost always includes a picture of her dog, Schnapps.

I would buy your mom some beautiful scarfs and learn to tie them in all differnt ways. And have some knitted caps for when the fall weather gets here in a month or so.. I am sure San Diego is much warmer longer than most of the country but just so she feels better about her apperance.. while she is recouperating... getting out in the sunshine and fresh air even for a little bit each day will help her feel so much better...

THAT is Robin Celli of delaware headhuggers, her patterns are amazing, also adaptable so you can choose your yarn!

I have been making caps with fun fur for chemo patients. They love them. They are soft and gentle on their sensitive scalps. It's like an in-between. They aren't ready for a wig, but don't like the bald look either. The pattern I use is at http://headhuggers.org/patterns/kpatt10.htm
I have a friend who used to knit this sort of hat for young cancer patients who had lost their hair. She used eyelash yarn, but in bright Muppet colors like Elmo red, Cookie Monster blue, etc.

I'm making one for my sister with Panda Cotton - bamboo, cotton and elastic nylon. It's knitting up nicely and is quite soft. My sister also complains of most hats being too hot (it's been a scorcher summer in Michigan this year). We went online, and found a way of making a really good looking turban-type head cover with a t-shirt that you cut off just below the sleeves. Google chemo headwraps for more ideas. There are lots of them out on the internet.
Sending you positive energies.

I could not keep scarves on my head - they just slid off. I went to the local motorcycle shop and bought several cotton do-rags. They were comforable in the summer. I could not stand to wear my wig - it was irritating. Other than that, I would suggest something soft and washable - maybe a cotton or linen blend. Cotton alone tends to grow as worn.
