My three year old grandson just had surgery to remove his left kidney and Wilm's tumor. He has mets to both lungs. His mom is to have a C/S soon and she has pneumonia in both lungs. The baby starts his first chemo this Thurs and mom is not allowed to be around him at all for at least 72 hours because of her pneumonia. I am asking for prayers please. I have knitted and crocheted some chemo caps. The CA society just says to use soft yarn. Does anyone have experience with this or have any suggestions about what will be the best yarn to use? Thank you and God bless you all.

So sorry to hear about your grandson and his Mom. :(

Berocco Comfort is oh so soft for a wee one. I have also used Cascade Ultra Pima cotton for chemo caps. I try to choose patterns that are of a simple design for greater comfort.

My son is also fighting cancer still and as he told me soft is needed because the chemo cause the nerves to become super sensitive to touch or things rubbing. I have used Crayon Simply soft yarn, Premier Ever soft also Everyday soft is great for this. Red Heart has a soft yarn also. No wool itchy, Red Heart's yarn some are real scratchy, like the Super Saver. I checked out that new one Red Heart has Team colors..I couldn't stand to touch that myself with my hand. Best way to go is take the yarn rub it on your for arm underside if its rough to your skin don't use it. I have even used baby yarns.

And there is a prayer out for your family that the Lord hold them and help them.

As soft as you can get with no seams. I find that roll brims or any thick edge band is uncomfortable to lay against. Some people get very itchy, tingly, or even crawly sensations in their scalp. I find that keeping the scalp well moisturized helps with the itching. My prayers to you and yours. Kids are tough little cookies, their strength always amazes me.xoxo

Cathy,
I have a friend, breast CA survivor, who crochets chemo caps. She uses Cotton Ease - a 50/50 cotton & acrylic blend. Personally, I would prefer some cotton in a chemo cap.

Please be sure that many of us on this site have prayed for you and your loved ones already. Take care of yourself so you are strong when you're needed. I hope they live close to you so you can help. I would like to know your grandson's first name, if you think it's OK to share it.

I'll definitely keep your family in my prayers. How difficult to have to stand by when those we love are ill.
I've made many chemo caps and the three requirements for them are colorful, soft, and washable for lots of reasons. If you keep those attributes in mind when selecting yarn, the caps will be used and appreciated.

My prayers go out to you, and all, who need them - simply request help to all those in need and God takes it from there.

But for the question about what yarn to use. Believe person meant Caron Simply Soft. I use this when making my baby hats for charity - very soft even before washing. NEVER NEVER USE RED HEART! It never softens up enough for your needs even after washing. This has been discussed many times here on KP. You can find Caron for $3.27 6 oz at my local Walmart in MN. Actully have some colors on sale for less.

Again, may all go well for your family.

Cathy-I'm keeping your grandson and daughter in my thoughts, hoping for a good outcome. For warm weather, a nice soft organic cotton, bamboo, or a silk blend. For cooler weather, alpaca is very soft and much more reasonably priced than cashmere (alpaca is considered the "poor man's cashmere). Classic Elite Lush is a wonderfully soft blend of wool and angora and works well for cool weather chemo hats as does Classic Elite Inca Alpaca. Berocco Comfort is another very soft yarn. Most of these yarns are premium yarns with higher prices but you generally need less than one ball for a childs hat. Best, Denise

My prayers are with you and you and your family will be in my kneemail. As some have said Caron super soft and the soft cottons are the best for chemo caps. I use both and send them to Knots of Love and Head Huggers. Know that your knitting sisters are with you.

God bless you and your family during this time!

I made a chemo hat out of Lion Brand Micro Spun. It's microfiber. It felt really soft and the recipient told me how much she loved it. Of course, she's a lady who'd tell me that just because I made it for her. But it did feel really nice as I was working on it.
