I have a design that I would like to knit on a scarf. The design is on a grid pattern, but I know that if I just use that, the length of the stitches will be different and will " compact" the design so as to not look quite right. Is there a place I can go to do a conversion for the stitches?

Use knitting graph paper and transfer your design on to that.

I think what you want is Stitch Fiddle, which is a free online charting program. https://www.stitchfiddle.com/en

Looks like you need to create a login, upload the design into the program, and give it your knitting gauge.
