I want to order this pattern in "Annie's Crochet Catalog. It says that you use 2 strands of size 5 thread. I don't like using thread, it is too fine for me. Could I use a sock yarn instead? It is a beautiful pineapple design

You could use 2 strands of a fingering sock weight or 1 strand of a worsted weight as a general rule of thumb -- but I would do a swatch just to be safe

Yarn may make a "softer" product than thread. Depending on your project, that may or may not be desirable. Have fun with it!
