I have been saving cores from wrapping paper and paper towels just for this purpose. I will start them soon.

There is the link. The cores are cut into about 1.5 in pieces and the yarn is wrapped around and tied at the top to form a pompom.
Hope this helps, and no, you are not dimwitted. I was thrown the first time I saw them then found out how they are made and it all came together.
