DK yarn

When a pattern calls for DK yarn, can I use worsted or baby yarn? DK is not easy to find.

it would be a good idea to do a swatch to check the gauge or you will run into problems of the pattern being too large or too small with the yarn you use.

Anything in the US #3 yarn weight class will work.

#3 Light - - DK/Sport/Light Worsted (UK=DK) (AU/NZ=8 Ply)

Some baby yarn is DK weight--like everyone says, swatch.

I don't know where you are but it shouldn't be that hard to find #3. Online you should be able to find lots of it. In the states WEBS, knit picks or abroad try Deramores. Deramores ships almost everywhere. Great yarn and lots of DK.
If you are still stuck you need to swatch to get gauge.

I have 3 different types of yarn that are labeled DK and none of the gauges on 4.0mm needles match. As others have indicated, the most important thing is to do a swatch.

You also might try two skeins of fingering weight held together to see if you get gauge.

You could double the baby yarn.

It seems to me the big box stores in the US don't carry much #3 weight yarn except for what is considered baby yarn in pastel colors. I buy most of my #3/sport/DK yarn online. Cascade 220 Superwash Sport is my favorite from WEBS in the US, and Sirdar DK is my favorite from Deramores in the UK.

I prefer dk even for afghans and I like to use lots of colors. The two yarn shops nearby don't have much in this weight. I am currently waiting for an order from deramores of Sirdar. I do like very much the superwash from knitpicks.

JoAnn's and Wal-Mart carries alot of #3 and not just in baby pastels. :wink:
Each store location stocks different than the next.
You can order from there sites as well, and Wal-mart will deliver to the store closest to you.

I haven't been in a Michael's for quite awhile.

Yes, each store's stock can be very different. I love Joann's and shop there often, but the store in my location has very little #3 weight on the shelves, and even what is available online doesn't necessarily meet my needs. As for Wal-Mart, my hubby and I are totally done with them. The stores nearest us are usually in a state of disarray and customer service is so lacking, its pretty much non-existent. Too many bad and downright rude experiences have convinced us Wal-Mart in our area is not a place we wish to shop any longer.

I guess it depends on location. JoAnn's, Walmart and Michaels only have baby colors in dk. AC Moore has a limited supply of adult colors. The lys have selection in wool, limited acrylics, so I place my order with Deramores
