The British woman killed in Queensland was not killed by an Australian but by a Frenchman.

A French man allegedly cried €œAllahu Akbar€ during a stabbing attack that left a 21-year-old British woman dead in front of up to 30 onlookers at a backpackers hostel in Australia’s north-east.

The 29-year-old suspect allegedly repeated the phrase €“ which means God is greatest in Arabic when arrested by Queensland police who were €œconfronted with a terrible scene€ at the hostel in Home Hill €“ about 100km south of Townsville €“ on Tuesday night.

The dead woman was named by Australian and British media as Mia Ayliffe-Chung, from Derbyshire, who was reported to be days into a three-month working holiday in the area after having worked in a bar in the Gold Coast.

Steve Gollschewski, a deputy police commissioner, said the alleged offender€™s comments €œmay be construed as being of an extremist nature€ and investigators were working with Australian federal police to establish his motives.

But police were €œnot ruling out any motivations at this early stage, whether they be criminal or political€.
Investigators would also consider whether €œmental health or drug misuse€ issues were a factor in the attack alongside any €œindication of an extremist slant or he was radicalised€, Gollschewski said at a press conference in Brisbane.

€œThis is not about race or religion, it is about individual criminal behaviour,€ he said.
Police were not searching for anyone else and there was €œno ongoing threat to the community€, he said.

I have attached a picture of the British woman who was killed.

I wonder if the world is worse today, or is it that we get to hear of everything that goes on. There is also camera footage of every outrage.
I agree with you. Everything is there in our lounge room or on our desktop as soon as it happens. Not just once as it was previously in the news, but constantly. People are interviewed for their thoughts; people passing by, people who were involved, in fact anyone and everyone. People with mobile phones catch the news on their phone, complete with photos and then post on social media or contact mainstream media. The world has shrunk so we now know what happens in the far flung corners of the earth as soon as it happens. Journalists are now stationed in every country and with rapid air travel they can reach far flung places very quickly; hence we hear more news than we did some 50 or 60 years ago.

Recent good news from Ellicott City after major flood which resulted in 2 dead and numerous stores and homes ruined.
The owner of one of the devastated stores was cleaning up and he commented on how very surprised and happy he was with all of the help from everyday people who were not affected by the tragedy. It will take a long time to rebuild once the clean up is complete, but it sounds like most of the stores will reopen. The Army Corps of Engineers is working on the project, too.
