felting question

I have a question about a felting project. I know that felting needs to knit loosely. I have a bag pattern that calls for a single strand of yarn. I want to us 2 strands to get a color variation. Should I increase my needle size to get a looser knit or do you think it would be OK as is? Gauge is not important for this pattern.
