This is the drop garter stitch, 4 ply yarn, size 8 needles. Its light and airy, good for springtime. Im going to join the ends for an infinity scarf.

I made the cascade as you call it and you can see it on page 3 under Love Those Scarves. Scroll down to the third picture.
I know it as the "Seafoam Pattern".

I made a scarf using "lasso" stitch, a twisted drop stitch, and there's no way you could do a border on it. You could probably crochet around the edges when you were through, but it would take several crochet stitches in each drop.
