I found this chart this morning and though it might be of assistance.

Link to download a pdf copy is right above the chart. It's not a pdf as they claim, it's an image; so you'll have to right click on the image and save it.
Thank You for the link .it will be very helpful to convert from US to UK as we have a different way of plys in wool .Where some say 8 ply to us in the UK it's DK wool.

Great chart it gives a rough guide...my last shawl used over 2000 yards of fingering weight yarn but that was a large shawl
