I am new to this site but have been knitting for about 7 years. I have trouble with the thumbs on my gloves and mittens. When I pick up stitches to make the thumb and start knitting in the round, I always have an obvious hole in my finished work. How do I correct this?

I knit to the place where the hole usually occurs, pick up the stitch that is BELOW the next stitch on the left hand needle and put it on the left needle too, then knit that stitch and the next stitch on the left needle together.
