Hi, i have a pattern for a Cardigan that asks for 860 yards of Rowan Cotton Tape, Bulky / 12 ply (7 wpi), which is a bit expensive for me. Any ideas for a good substitute?

Sorry, I can't find that yarn in the Rowan site. I don't know the pattern. We need more info.

I did find the yarn. It's been discontinued for a number of years. Go to yarndex.com and click cotton, Rowan, and bulky. You can click on the yarn photo to enlarge it. That's what the yarn looked like. You might be able to find something similar, but not in cotton.

I would try a bulky yarn and see if you get the same gauge, then adjust your needle size if necessary. Most of the patterns I follow end up with yarn substitutes.

So do you think it matters if it's "tape" or not?

No, I think you would still end up with a nice cardigan if you got the same number of stitches per inch as the gauge calls for. That's the wonder of knitting--every creation is going to be unique--even if you were using exactly the same yarn called for in the pattern.

I don't know if I have ever used the yarn called for. If the gauge works out, go for it! I also see the picture in other colors I would prefer when I am looking at patterns.
