I am working on sock #2 with sweet tomato heel. I guess I concentrated on heel too much, frogged it twice before I got it right. I was all the way to toe shaping when I realized that I forgot to knit ribbing for cuff. So I started at cast on edge and tinked 12 rows of waffle pattern stitch by stich and then knit the 12 rows of ribbing for cuff. Satisfied with my accomplishment, I proceeded to toe shaping. Before I did kitchener, I measured with sock #1, and found I was abaout 1 inch too short. Never measure by striping pattern!! Now I have to frog toe shaping. My mother always said the more you ravel out the longer the item will wear. I guess these socks will last forever. Grrrr

Your mom probably said that thinking that if you have to frog it many times you will hate it so much you will put it in the drawer and leave it there forever, so forever it will last! All your horror stories about socks keep me buying those zillion packs when they are on sale...one day I will bite the bullet and give it a try...I have the needles, I have the yarn....now..like the cowardly lion....where do I find courage? ;)

I too have had these problems when knitting socks so I started to do both socks at once on separate needles. I do the cuff on one then on the second- knit 10 rows on one then the second etc.

That way the socks both match exactly and I am finished with the pair at the same time. No dreaded second sock to do for the pair.

works for me!!

Me Too. I would not like putting a shoe over all that work.
In Texas (Houston) I have not seen anyone with sock, except those hanging on fireplace at Christmas time.
Perhaps you might like to try the Pedicure socks, leaves the toes open and you can wear flip flops with them. That way everyone can see your knitting. I agree that I don't always like to hide my knitting in my shoes.

I wear my socks, brightly colored and/or striped, with my walking shoes, a matching color t-shirt and shorts lots of the time. Since most of the sock is down in my shoe, I can go crazy with designs on the cuff.

I live in central Florida where summers are hot, hot, hot and steamy. I've found wool sock yarn is not any hotter than my cotton socks. Who knew?

Socks are a perfect summer project since they don't drape all over my lap. I've got a pair on my circular needle right now to take with me when I go somewhere I know I'll be sitting or waiting. Love to knit them.

this is a good idea. Will try it next time. I have made many, many socks without all the problems this one gave me. Can I blame it on a senior moment or moments?

I think that's so funny! Obviously, you can purchase socks that fit and don't bunch up in your shoes. I have a long, very, very narrow foot and LOVE being able to make socks which actually fit my foot! There are wonderful.

I would rather knit socks than almost anything! My close friends and family are disappointed if I give them anything but a pair of socks for any special occasion. My son LOVES the pair I made for him with pink camo yarn! Makes made feel good. :-D

A couple of years ago, I somehow stumbled across Silver's Sock Class. Sat down, and over the course of the next week or two made a pair of socks. I know that I can do them, but I'd rather spend my time knitting other things. If one of my grandkids asks for a pair of socks, I'll do it, but that's the only reason for me. Guess that's why the good Lord made us all different, wouldn't it be boring if all the patterns were for socks? Paula

OK Answer me this one. If I started with a Christmas Stocking for the first "sock" would I be learning the correct way to knitting socks.[/quote

I think so. I'm not an expert, but think the Christmas stocking looks pretty straight forward.

I'm thinking about making Christmas stockings for my dogs. :D
Maybe I'll use some of the yarn the little devils have snitched and played with in the backyard?

Yes, it will teach you some important basic manuevers, but I think it really depends on the pattern. Of course you would not want a huge, wide leg or ankle portion on a sock you would wear. You would definitely want huge and wide for a Christmas stocking!!!

OI...I feel your pain...

Having said that...this is exactly why I knit both socks at the same time..whether toe up, cuff down...DPN's, circulars ..magic loop...whatever the method is..and I prefer DPN's.

Just works for me...

For those who have no desire to knit socks. My mother was from Brisbane, which has a tropical climate, and she knitted socks to sell in Canberra, which is very close to our snow fields. Everytime the store received a pair they sold the same day. We (yes me included) may not be inspired to knit socks - the wearers certainly appreciate their comfort.
