Me Too. I would not like putting a shoe over all that work.
In Texas (Houston) I have not seen anyone with sock, except those hanging on fireplace at Christmas time.

I wear my socks, brightly colored and/or striped, with my walking shoes, a matching color t-shirt and shorts lots of the time. Since most of the sock is down in my shoe, I can go crazy with designs on the cuff.

I live in central Florida where summers are hot, hot, hot and steamy. I've found wool sock yarn is not any hotter than my cotton socks. Who knew?

Socks are a perfect summer project since they don't drape all over my lap. I've got a pair on my circular needle right now to take with me when I go somewhere I know I'll be sitting or waiting. Love to knit them.
