I founded Handmade Especially for You, a non-profit charity that knits/crochets comfort scarves for abused women. In 2010 we made 10,000 scarves and donated them to more than 30 shelters in S. CA. This year, we plan to make at least 15,000 and donate them to more shelters. All the yarn companies donate yarn to us. We make their yarn into kits which we distribute to all those who want to participate in our project. Right now we are gathering 2,000 comfort scarves to distribute for Mother's Day, May 8. Thanks in advance for participating in our scarf project. If you need free yarn, please contact: Leslye Borden, Founder handmade.leslye @gmail.com

I'm curious to know if you were about to reach your goal. My daughter and I were able to send scarves. Did you reach your goal?

I've not seen any word on this forum, but I may have missed something.

Take excellent care.

I haven't had a chance to send the update. We made our goal (we were 70 short but we will make up for that this month). Today we have Macy's Community Shopping Day. As soon as that's over, I will publish the newsletter.

We are starting on getting the 800 we need every month plus saving up for the 5,000 we will need for xmas. If Mother's Day shipping was any indication, it will take us 2 months to ship the xmas scarves.

Thanks to you and your daughter. I hope you received a thank you from me. Leslye

Here's all the info you need. Thanks for your inquiry. We distribute 800 scarves each month. Our project is ongoing. And we will need 5,000 for Christmas. So we need you!

Welcome to Handmade Especially for You (501(c)3). We knit and crochet comfort scarves and distribute them to shelters for abused women. In 2010, we donated 10,000 comfort scarves to 27 shelters in CA. This looks like a lot, but we still need more because there is so much abuse that shelters are always full. We distribute at least 800 scarves each month, except May, Nov, and Dec, when we donate lots more. We just finished our big push for Mother’s Day. We sent out almost 2,000 comfort scarves. We’re now gathering scarves for our regular monthly delieveries (800) and for Christmas (5,000) so we really need YOU!

Here are the specs for making comfort scarves:

big needles (size 15 or 17) or big hooks (K, N, P)
soft yarn (for comfort)
happy color
at least 4 inches wide but no more than 5 inches wide
at least 60 inches long
open stitch (for distribution in a warm climate)
some decoration like fun fur or ribbon to individualize each scarf and make it a personal gift for the recipient

Please send your finished scarves to:

Handmade Especially for You c/o Leslye Borden
30065 Grandpoint Lane
Rancho Palos Verdes CA 90275

If you would like me to send you free yarn, please send me your address and tell me if you prefer knitting or crocheting. And please make a donation to cover the cost of my shipping the yarn to you. You can donate through PayPal. We have a link on our website: www.handmadeespecially.org

Thanks in advance for your participation.

I look forward to hearing from you soon.

When you're using your own yarn, you can use any pattern you want. When you're using our yarn (because it is measured), please use: garter stitch, diagonal, wrap and drop, ******. I think these patterns are on our website. I will make sure to include them in the package. Also it is best to knit 10 stitches on size 15 or 17 needles. That way, you won't run out of yarn. Thanks for understanding. Leslye
