If you look at the suggested yarn it appears to be a self striping yarn.

this is the yarn it calls for.. it looks like a self stripping yarn.. I love this pattern also but I have no idea what a substitute yarn would be... I think (off the top of my head) that maybe Knit Picks Chroma would be nice.. I hope others can help ... you do need a self stripping that has LONG color ways... changing too quick will be very busy...

I agree with Ronie...the other way you can get variegation is to chose several colors that blend...I would use my stash...

Knit with 2 strands together...

Choose let's say 4 colors, A, B, C, & D and knit this way:

1st: A + A
2nd: break one A and tie in one strand of B
3rd: break A and attach another B...B + B
4th: Break one B: B + C
5th: Break other B: C + C

Continue this way with all colors.....it is a little more trouble, but you will choose where you want the stripes and you can use your stash yarn.

Just an idea..maybe it will help.
