I have been knitting for only a short time, I have been working on a dishcloth. I am trying to figure out why it seems my dishcloth isn't quite square, it is square at the bottom but as I work on it, doesn't stay square...HELP!!! :roll:

Hi Shannon
What stitches are you using? Are you counting them? Are you making decreases? Try a pattern with no decreases or increases for a while and see what happens. It may be just the yarn and will shape up when you block it. Hope this helps.

I am using the knit stitch, I haven't been counting stitches. No there are no increases or decreases its just a basic dishcloth.

You have the right idea, Start simple.
Count you stitches every row. I use a safety pin to mark the last stitch. I would always pick up an extra stitch at the end of the row and the shape got all cattywampers!!
Oh by the way, your dust won't mind being clean with a less than perfect square. Keep going. Keep counting.
Oh yeah your suppose to be having fun and relaxing..just kidding. You'll get there.

Without a pattern and not being able to watch you, it's hard too tell what's going on. Perhaps it's a zig zag pattern? LOL! There are zig zag scarves to be knitted = fun!!

The only way it would not square up in process is for one to drop or add stitches, K2 tog too often, no increasing where one should.......probably some other things.

Now, I have a very easy knit dishcloth pattern made on the diagonal to share with you - it's in e-mail format in my mail client inbox with PICS - it also includes the pattern for the knit, hanging, buttoned hand towel that is to die for. Works in the kitchen or bath.......

Anyone who wants it may have it.

LOL @ Linda. That's exactly what I was going to say. All of it. I think the most important thing to remember in knitting is this...if your mistake is not noticeable & doesn't affect the pattern in a drastic way, you will probably be the only one to ever know it's there...or another knitter, but no big deal!! Hey, maybe your dust will think the cloth is supposed to be shaped like that! ;-)

I find that sometimes when knitting, I have knited a st and find that I had left some of it behind. Of course I find it when I am knitting the next row and sometimes I think it is a st that has come off the needle some and pick of some to go with it. This is wrong to do. I find if you have knited a few rows you will find that leading up to the st is a row from below and if you look you can find where you added the st. I do hope this helps you. Shannoneal.
