K1, [(K2tog) twice, (yo, K4) 4 times, (K2tog) twice] 4 times, K1.

Well hey, I've managed my first copy and paste but I can't get this row to work out over 50 sts. Can someone explain which bits I'm doing 4 times??

1. K1
2. k2tog, k2tog; yo, k4, yo, k4, yo, k4,k2tog, k2tog
Work Step 2 three more times for total of four times altogether
3. K1 again
I count this as 98 sts.
Why does the intructions say 50 sts?
There seems to be an error in this pattern.
Are pattern errata available or can you contact the designeer for help?

Reminds me of Algebra, I didn't understand that either. I usually take graph paper and make a chart to follow. It helps.

The stitches in the bracket remain even. You knit two together twice for a decrease of two, then you have four yarn overs that increase your stitches by four and then you have two more knit two together for a decrease of two This results in plus two minus four equals minus two then plus two equals zero.

Hope this helps!

All the above are correct, but it doesn't explain the 50 st. You would get 50 st if you repeated the instructions within the brackets twice, but when you do it 4 times you get 98 st.
I get 50. The stitch pattern repeat uses 12 stitches, times 4 is 48, plus the knit 1 at the beginning and end = 50

oh, you're right - I can't read! It looked so much like a F&F stitch that's what I saw (the center part being yo k1 x4 - but that's not what it says)

What's the pattern from? maybe it is a typo!

Could you write those 12 out for me because the way I'm reading it it's 24 sts so somehow I'm doubling up?

It's a Louisa Harding pattern for fingerless mitts called Sophie. It was a free download from the Love Knitting online yarn shop. I have checked it out on Ravelry but no- one mentions a problem with this so I just assumed I was reading it wrong. But you all seem to agree that I need double the amount of stitches I have to make this work. Frustrating! She calls it a scallop edging pattern.

Actually, hasherboy is right, you repeat what's in the square brackets 4 times,BUT I found an error in the (yo, K4) 4 times. It should be (yo, K1) 4 times. I actually knitted the pattern up using the yo, K1 and it came out to 48 sts. plus the 1st K1 and last K1.

Now that makes sense, thank you so much.

Ok, I found some more needles, frogged completely having tinked so often the yarn was in a fuzzy mess and here's where we're at. It is not a difficult pattern once you lovely, helpful people have sorted out the errors for me. I've done so many feather and fan patterns I really should have cracked it myself but many thanks to you all for taking the time to sort me out.
