The pattern I am doing is leisure arts #801398. I am working on the back. Row 6. Purl across. Row 7 k1, slip 1 as if to purl, knit across to last 2 are, slip 1 as if to purl, k1 row 8 purl across row 9 (decrease row) k1, slip 1 as if to knit, k1 PSSO, knit across to last 3 are, k2 tog, k1. Then it says how many stitches you will have and then how many times to repeat rows 6-9 for each size which is 0 times. I understand all this now is what I do not understand and it is this decrease one stitch at each armhole edge in same manner, every other row 24 times: 30 stitches remain. What I am not understanding is do I continue rows 6-9 or do I just do 9 and a purl row

By what you wrote here, sounds, to me, that you do row 9 then a purl row, 24 times. The way you can know, foe sure, is to do the math.

Every other row, 24 times, decreasing one st each end=48 sts decreased. So, if you are to have 30 sts remaining...did you start with 78 sts? You didn't tell us how many stitches you had after you finished rows 6, 6, 8 and 9.

You will work Row 9 (for your size) and have 84 st. Then, Decrease one st at each Armhole edge in the same manner, every other row, 26 times. You will have worked from 84 st. to 32 st. (a total of 52 decreases) following the decreases in Row 9. Adjust those numbers for your size.

Your decrease row is K1, slip 1 as if to KNIT, k1, psso, knit across to last 3 sts. K2tog., k1. (worked on RS)

Since you are working in stockinette, yes, you will purl what would be Row 10, and work decreases on the RS/knit rows. Decreases in Row 11 and purl in Row 12, etc.
