Start with an odd number cast on. I purl the 1st row, then on each knit row,decrease 1 stitch at beginning and end of row until you have only 1 stitch left. Pick up down the left side the same number of stitches you started with and repeat until you have the 6 triangles. Sew the two edges together.

I have thought about that, just never tried it. If it works let me know!
