At the risk of being hung from the gallows...why choose HL yarn over LYS yarn

Case in point:

I am making an afghan using HL Love this Yarn.. Bought 7 skeins on sale at $2.99each
Looked at similar acrylic and also mixed wool skeins... all at $ 7.00 or better

You KPers are smarter than I...but why should I patronize the local LYS... when the prices are so much higher. Does the quality of the yarn for an afghan really make a difference.

Haha, my LYS is Walmart. If you like the yarn you're using, and the people you give the finished projects to like the item and the yarn it's made from, who cares what brand it is or where you bought it.

Can't afford yarn from my Local Wool Shop. So I buy my yarn from Michael's & Walmart. Most of my crochet is Amigurumi, afghans, scarves, hats and mitts; the Bernat, Redheart and Loops and Threads acrylics do just fine.

I suppose if I were to start making fancy lacy scarves, shawls and sweaters, I might look for something a little less pedestrian; and may have to patronize that expensive little shop. Unless Walmart and Michael's carry the fancier yarns. Must admit, I haven't really looked.

My yarns come from Walmart and Little Knits. Walmart is handy and affordable and when I feel like a splurge is OK I look at what's available from www.littleknits.com. I have some lovely yarns to play with that I could actually afford. I have no LYS.

If you are happy with your yarn what else matters?

I have a small problem with up-scale yarns. Most of those I have were given to me, and they - along with the few I actually bought (thinking of two small skeins of camel) - are lingering in stash instead of getting used. Waiting for THE PERFECT PATTERN to present itself. Some of them have been in my stash for nigh on a decade, and will probably still be in it when I've died. I knit. I knit a lot. I knit shawls, scarves, gloves, mittens, toques, and blankets of every imaginable size, but I never seem to get around to knitting up the fancy gifted wool yarns or those two lonely skeins of camel.

My usual yarn source is the many Goodwill and Value Village stores around this city. A very few dollars spent there bring me seemingly endless miles of yarny joy!

I also use more budget minded yarn for large projects because my pocketbook tells me I have to. I take my business to my lys when I can and wish I could afford to more. When I buy local I'm supporting the area where I live. The employees at the lys generally make more and enjoy a better work environment. I'm not saying that big box stores are a bad place to work, but the relationship between employee and employer has to be different when they don't even know each other's name.

I am another who uses inexpensive acrylic yarn for large projects and most kid’s wear and othermore expensive fibers for garments and gifts. I want my lys to stay in business so I shop there whenever I want non acrylic yarns.

I don't knit large items or choose to have a huge stash so I shop only at my LYS as I want them in business as long as possible....plus others vendors there are also supported by my business. It's a win-win for all of us.
I haven't bought yarn in a long time as I'm trying to use up what I have.

I can think of a lot of reasons for not shopping at Hobby Lobby. If I need a low price on a lot of yarn, I go on line to Herschners or something like that. Knit Picks also has acrylics very reasonable and their wools are far less than most places. I have trouble with Hobby Lobby's philosophy and morals.

You and me both!!!

I buy what I need and can afford as the occasion arises. When I travel I love to pick up a lovely sock yarn from a LYS and make a pair of souvenir socks, or pick up some alpaca at a alpaca fair, or buy wool for felting, etc. But I also use yarn from Goodwill, or Hobby Lobby or wherever. I'm currently curled up in an afghan I made in college, and I know I couldn't afford expensive yarn then. I probably bought the cheapest yarn I could find! The afghan was a gift for my parents, who are gone now, and I am a grandma myself so that afghan has been washed and used for more years than I like to admit. Inexpensive yarn that has lasted many, many years - and it still looks great!

I love Hobby Lobby BECAUSE of their ethics and morals. That said, I use 100% acrylic yarn (RHSS, ILTY) because it is EASY to care for, especially for children's items, hats, mittens, or large family items such as throws, afghans, AND for charity because some of those folks fon't always have access to washers and dryers, and often rely on a creek and the outside air.

Do I purchase from my lys, yes, once a year when the yarn is on sale at 50% off or more. And the shop I patronize is in Cannon Beach, Oregon, no sales tax. Otherwise I visit Goodwill but only purchase yarns I know I will use.

I never buy from LYS! I hunt for bargains on ebay and on line. Even for luxury yarn. I save every time, usually no tax and many times free shipping. Save gas not driving.

Agree! I like the local seniors thrift shop and Goodwill.com, part of the fun is finding unusual colors and a great assortment, like the surprise effect - the few very fancy yarns included don't seem to go with anything else so they sit..

I love giving nice things away. I order my yarn from China. I pick sites with free postage. I can buy 10, 50 gram balls of cashmere and silk for a little over $12.00 or cashmere for $18.00 for the same amount. I just splurged and got some “yak” yarn. It is 8 times warmer than wool. It has been a search but I get good quality yarn. Some is from Australia. Their crocheting and knitting needles are cheap. I can get 11 sizes of dpn’s (5 needles in a set) for what I pay for one set here. I go by quality and price.

I have to stay within my budget and buying LYS yarn is a treat reserved for me. When I make something that is going to get a lot of hard wear/use, I go with HL I Love This Yarn. Their yarns are nicer, softer and easier to work with. The only HL yarn I don't like is Yarn Bee Soft Secret. This is supposed to be comparable to Caron Simply Soft but to me it's knits up much looser and the resulting project isn't something I like.

I will not buy from HL because of their negative treatment of women and their politics. There are plenty of good reasonable priced yarns to get in other places. I shop in all different places. Sometimes it is important to take a stand for what is right!
