I pick up the extra stitch in the row below in the corner. Here is a good picture tutorial of where to pick it up. (I believe AmyKnits also uses this one. It is one of the hints and tips I gave her when I re-wrote a pattern for her first pair of socks.) Zoereader said:how can I avoid a hole on one side of my sock at the heel when I pick up stitches? Thanks for any responses.

It is the stitch that is picked up one below and is referred to as "in the corner". ZoeAmyClaire said:I pick one up in the same column as the rest, but one row deeper into the ankle. I believe that's what others mean by "in the corner."
Twisting stitches on the first round after the pick up and expecting the hole to "full" up after the first washing, also help.
